Two decades ago when Advanced Systems Plus opened its doors, storage focused chiefly on files. Today, the focus is “on stuff," according to company President Maryjane Casey. “That stuff includes everything from tapes, DVDs and CDs to clothing, shoes, boxes, and even evidence. Twenty years ago, we were filing experts. Now, I tell people that we design space to hold more stuff. Also noteworthy is the shift from manual to automation in the file room. Notes Casey, “Back then, we applied little sticky labels to individual files. Now, we use bar-code tracking and RFID for file folders, which themselves often are electronically captured as well." The shift away from time-consuming and tedious manual operations also is evident in the design process itself. “I used to spend substantial amounts of time creating hand-drawn designs to configure storage solutions, emphasizes Casey. “Now, it’s all computer-generated, which means we spend less time and money on designing the solution, and more effort on implementing it creatively." Finally, the last 20 years has seen a shift away from discussing process to products. Explains Casey, “People today are far more informed about products and solutions, whereas two decades ago we spent much time explaining these—and correspondingly less time getting creative about how best to use and configure them. Now, we devote our efforts to deciding how best to use such products as modular millwork to fulfill storage needs that go far beyond records. “Today, the entire field is far more sophisticated. Design and implementation are far more fun both because of the myriad, esoteric solutions available." One area that hasn’t changed is the company’s focus on customer care. Most companies use the term as a mantra, but it’s the enterprises that actually do it that survive 20 years…and beyond. “We’ve always preached and practiced customer care," says Casey. “As soon as we could afford it, we hired our own installer so that quality and consistency issues stayed under our roof instead of being outsourced. Our lead installer, Brad Leeds, has been with me 19 years."
